How are you different from my high school's counselor?I work for you, not for your school. I am dedicated to what is best for you, not what is best for an overall graduation rate. I work year-round, meaning we can work together over the summer to maximize your college application preparation. Additionally, most public high schools have guidance counselors rather than college counselors. Guidance counselors are trained to help students stay in school and graduate from high school. I work to get you into college, which is a different process. I will help you work with your high school counselor to make the most of that relationship.

When should I start?Colleges look at high school records starting with 9th grade, so I recommend starting with Helios in 9th grade. The earlier we begin working together, the more time you have to develop the characteristics colleges want to see in successful applicants. Starting early is your best weapon in the college admissions process. And, because Helios charges a flat fee no matter when you start, you get the most for your money when you start early.

How often do we meet? The frequency of meetings differs from grade to grade and student to student. I meet with younger students (9th and 10th graders) a minimum of four times per year. I meet with older students more often, creating personalized meeting plans based on individual needs and goals.
-
Where are you located? All meetings are held virtually over Zoom.
-
Do you help with standardized testing?I work with students to create a timeline for standardized testing and refer to trusted test prep tutors who have helped previous students reach their goals for standardized testing.
-
Do you help with essays for classes?Working on essays for college applications is part of the comprehensive college counseling package. Helios offers academic coaching plans that include helping with essays for high school English, history, and social studies classes. Academic coaching is designed to help students develop their time management skills and writing skills to help them become stronger students who can achieve more overall.
-
Do you only help with the college admissions process? No, Helios helps students grow as individuals, develop into leaders, and strengthen their character through finding their passions, figuring out what they value, and developing leadership initiatives.
